Why iPhone Pro Screens Cost More

There is a consistent price gap between standard iPhone models and Pro models. This is not markup — it reflects genuinely different hardware:

  • ProMotion 120Hz display — Pro models use LTPO OLED panels that dynamically adjust refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz. These panels cost significantly more to manufacture than the standard 60Hz OLED in non-Pro models.
  • Always-On Display hardware — from the iPhone 14 Pro onwards, the LTPO panel supports always-on functionality. The replacement screen must include this capability.
  • Dynamic Island — the pill-shaped cutout at the top of Pro screens (and all iPhone 16 models) requires precise alignment of the proximity sensor, front camera, and Face ID components during replacement.
  • Peak brightness — Pro screens reach 2,000 nits outdoors versus 1,000–1,600 nits on standard models. Higher-brightness panels cost more.
  • Larger physical size — Pro Max screens are the largest in the iPhone lineup, requiring more OLED material per panel.

Genuine Apple vs Aftermarket Screens

This is the most important decision you will make during an iPhone screen replacement. Both options have a place, but the trade-offs are real:

  • Genuine Apple screens — identical colour accuracy, brightness, True Tone support, and haptic feedback to the original. Face ID and all sensors work perfectly. No "non-genuine part" warning in Settings. Costs 30–50% more than aftermarket.
  • High-quality aftermarket (OLED) — visually close to genuine, good colour and brightness. May lose True Tone and trigger the Settings notification about non-genuine parts. Touch sensitivity and responsiveness are generally excellent. Costs 20–40% less than genuine.
  • Budget aftermarket (LCD) — available for older models only. Noticeably different from OLED — thicker, lower contrast, no true blacks. Functional but the visual downgrade is obvious. Cheapest option.

At iRepair, we recommend genuine Apple screens for phones under 2 years old and for anyone who values colour accuracy (photographers, designers, content creators). For older phones or tight budgets, high-quality aftermarket OLED is a solid choice. We always explain both options before you commit. For a deeper dive into genuine vs aftermarket parts, see our battery comparison guide — the same principles apply.

What Else Can Affect the Cost

A screen replacement is not always just a screen replacement. These factors can increase the final price:

  • Bent or damaged frame — if the phone's aluminium or titanium frame is bent from the drop, it needs to be straightened before the new screen can be fitted. A new screen on a bent frame will not seat properly and may crack again.
  • Face ID damage — the Face ID sensor array sits behind the screen. If the impact damaged the Face ID flex cable, the sensor itself may need repair. Face ID components are tightly paired to the device, making this a specialist repair.
  • Back glass damage — a severe drop often damages both the front screen and back glass. If both need replacing, the combined cost is higher but still typically cheaper than buying a new phone.
  • Water ingress through cracks — if you have been using the phone with a cracked screen for weeks, water or moisture may have entered and caused additional internal damage. This is why we recommend getting cracks fixed promptly. Our water damage guide covers what happens inside when moisture gets in.

How Long Does an iPhone Screen Replacement Take?

At iRepair Avondale, most iPhone screen replacements are completed in 30–45 minutes while you wait. The process:

  1. Check-in and diagnosis — we confirm the screen is the issue and check for additional damage (5 minutes)
  2. Screen removal — the damaged screen is carefully detached, and sensors (Face ID, earpiece, proximity sensor) are transferred to the new screen (10–15 minutes)
  3. New screen installation — the replacement is connected, sealed with new adhesive, and the phone is reassembled (10–15 minutes)
  4. Testing — touch sensitivity, Face ID, True Tone, brightness, and display uniformity are all verified before handback (5 minutes)

Walk-ins are welcome — no appointment needed. We are at 391 Rosebank Road, Avondale, serving customers from across Auckland including New Lynn, Mt Albert, Henderson, Waterview, Blockhouse Bay, and Green Bay. If you are outside Auckland, our free nationwide courier service means you can ship your iPhone to us and have it returned repaired within 2–3 business days.

Is It Worth Replacing the Screen or Should You Upgrade?

A screen replacement costing $200–$400 on a phone worth $800–$1,500 is almost always the smarter financial move. You keep your data, your settings, and a phone you already know — for a fraction of the cost of buying new.

The only time we advise against repair is when the phone has multiple issues (battery degraded, charging problems, frame damage) and the combined repair cost approaches the price of a replacement.
